boxgutters

Detail sheet 1

boxgutters

Notes:

1   The girth of the box gutter and its related drain pipes must be adequate to cope with the expected run off of water.
2.  The base of all box gutters are to be sloped.
3.  Periodic inspection and cleaning of box gutters is essential.
4.  It is suggested that the stopends be lower than both the upstand and inner face of the box gutter to prevent flooding of the roof areas in the event of flash floods.

Expansionjoint – raised

Detail sheet 2

expansionjoint

Notes:

1   Roof structures are to have sufficient expansion joints to enable it to cope with all expected expansion and contraction.
2.  When specifying the waterproofing system both its compatibility and the co-efficient of expansion must be taken into account.
3.  Due to the varied nature of the components employed to waterproof expansion joints, close co-operation between the manufacturer/contractor and specifying bodies is required.

level

Parapets – higher than 0,5m

Detail sheet 4

high parapet

Notes:

1   The groove is situated not less than 200m above the roof/screed.
2.  The size and shape of the groove may vary depending on the waterproofing system used.
3.  The joint filler used must be compatible with the waterproofing system.

Parapets – lower than 0,5m

Detail sheet 6

low parapet

Notes:

1. The waterproofing system should be kept away from the outer edge of the parapet for aesthetic reasons and should be firmly secured to prevent wind uplift.
2. A DPC should be included where brick walling is used.

Planters

Detail sheet 7

planters

Notes:

1. The diameter of the weep holes must be sufficient to enable the waterproofing system to be dressed into it, and still allow the required amount of water through.
2. The placement of planters should be considered carefully, to ensure that they do not interfere with sensitive areas such as expansion joints, outlets etc.
3. Care must be taken not to damage the waterproofing system while the protection is being installed.
4. The suitability of the waterproofing system should be checked at the design stage with regard to soils, acids, alkalis and root growth etc, to prevent damage from going unnoticed.

Rain water outlets

Detail sheet 8

outlets

Notes:

1. Sufficient outlets must be provided in relation to the size of the catchment area and the
expected rainfall.
2. The diameters of the downpipes must be sufficient to cope with the expected water.
3. Carefull attention must be given to dressing the waterproofing system into the rain water outlet.
4. Rain water outlets must never be situated in or through an expansion joint.
5. All outlets must be supplied with hail/leaf guards to prevent blockage.

outlet side

Notes:

1. Sufficient outlets must be provided in relation to the size of the catchment area and the
expected rainfall.
2. The diameters of the downpipes must be sufficient to cope with the expected water.
3. Carefull attention must be given to dressing the waterproofing system into the rain water outlet.
4. All outlets must be supplied with hail/leaf guards to prevent blockage.

Tanking - external

Detail sheet 10

Notes:

1. The suitability of the waterproofing system should be checked at the design stage with regard to
soils, acids, alkalis and root growth etc.
2. Care must be taken not to damage the waterproofing system while the protection wall is being erected.
3. The waterproofing system underfoot should at all times be protected, eg. Screed protection layer.
4. It is advisable to inspect the waterproofing system prior to backfilling or the installation of the wear surface to prevent damage from going unnoticed.

Trafficable surface over insulated roof

Detail sheet 11

Notes:

1. The flashing system indicated above may vary depending on the waterproofing system employed.
2. The trafficable surface is to have sufficient expansion joints to enable it to cope with the expected expansion and contraction (refer to SABS Code of practice – 021) eg. Expansion joints at 3m intervals.
3. When specifying the waterproofing system both its compatibility and co-efficient of expansion must be taken into consideration.
4. It is advisable to inspect the waterproofing system prior to the installation of the trafficable surface to prevent damage from going unnoticed.
5. The insulation material to be used must be given carefull consideration to ensure that it will meet all requirements eg. Point loading, water absorption etc.
